A Call To Action
Why Now?鈥
Systemic鈥痳acism has been an issue in the United States since the founding of our country. So, why are we only starting these conversations now? This is a鈥痲uestion鈥痬any have asked, and there is no satisfactory answer鈥攚e should have taken more action sooner.鈥 While鈥痬any have been fighting for equality throughout their lives,鈥痶he鈥痗ulmination of鈥痬any events鈥demands urgent 辫耻产濒颈肠鈥痑迟迟别苍迟颈辞苍鈥痶辞 focus on fixing the鈥痷ndeniable inequities experienced by people of color.鈥 We must use this鈥痬oment鈥痶o鈥痥ickstart long-needed conversations, critical self-reflection, and鈥痵trategic鈥 action.
鈥The HSS鈥疎quity鈥疭peakers Series鈥痠s鈥痮ne way we hope鈥痶o鈥痚ngage in this鈥痯rocess. 鈥疘t is鈥痑鈥痵pace鈥痶o鈥痟ave鈥痑ction-based dialogues鈥痓etween not only faculty鈥飞颈迟丑颈苍鈥departments, but across departments and with staff, administration, and students.鈥疘t is not the end, but merely one beginning to the actions we must take to鈥痙ismantle鈥痵ystemic racism.鈥
鈥The mission of the HSS Equity鈥 Speakers Series鈥痠s to broaden the Mt. SAC community鈥檚鈥痑wareness of equity issues鈥痑nd鈥痙evelop action plans that we鈥痚ach can鈥痷se鈥痶o enact change against racism.鈥
