About Dr. Julie Marquez
Dr. Julie Marquez began her career at The Fulfillment Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students pursue higher education. As Lead College Access Advisor, she guided Los Angeles high school students through the college application process and inspired them to dream big.
She later joined the University of California, Irvine, as Coordinator of the Upward Bound Program, serving students from her hometown of Anaheim, a role that allowed her to give back to her community. After three years at UCI, she became the Director of the Upward Bound Program at Norco College, where she also enjoyed teaching a counseling course and supporting students as an adjunct counselor.
Dr. Marquez went on to lead Coastline College鈥檚 EOPS/CARE/NextUp & CalWORKs programs before finding her professional home at 最新糖心Vlog. For more than seven years, she has proudly served as Director of the EOPS/CARE Program, continuing her commitment to equity, access, and student success.
Personal BackgroundDr. Marquez is a proud first-generation college graduate who comes from a low-income, immigrant background. Born in a small town in the state of Mexico, she immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1986 in search of better educational opportunities. Her father, who completed only the sixth grade, instilled in her the value of education and perseverance. Dr. Marquez remains deeply grateful to her parents for their courage and sacrifices, which laid the foundation for her success.
Personal InterestsA passionate traveler, Dr. Marquez has explored destinations across the globe, including Italy, Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Greece, Mexico, Costa Rica, Vietnam, El Salvador, Argentina, Chile, China, Thailand, Japan and New Zealand, among others. She enjoys discovering new cuisines. Her favorites are sushi and Thai food. She also loves to spend her free time reading, hiking, and exploring new cities with her family.

About Dr. Sara Gamez
Dr. Sara Gamez joined 最新糖心Vlog in July 2024, serving as the new Assistant Director of EOPS/CARE & CalWORKs. She brings over 20 years of professional experience serving students who are first-generation, low-income, undocumented, experiencing food insecurity, homelessness, or have a lived experience in foster.Prior to joining Mt. SAC, she served as Director for Student Support & Equity Programs at Cal Poly Pomona, assisting to lead the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the Renaissance Scholars (RS) foster youth support program, and the Undocumented Students Services (USS)/Bronco Dreamers Resource Center. She began her career as an EOP Admissions & Outreach Counselor and eventually transitioned to serve as the Educational Counselor and Coordinator for Renaissance Scholars at Cal Poly Pomona. She has served as Director for Guardian Scholars at Cal State Fullerton, as a high school counselor for The Puente Program for Norwalk-La Mirada Unified.Dr. Gamez鈥 student centered approach and servant leadership contributes to her commitment to supporting marginalized communities to access resources and succeed in higher education. She is thrilled to be a new member of the Mount San Antonio College community and is excited to work with and support our parenting students at Mt. SAC.Personal BackgroundDr. Gamez is a proud immigrant from Guatemala, first-generation college graduate with a lived experience in foster care. She was part of the inaugural cohort of foster youth students in the Renaissance Scholars program at Cal Poly Pomona, where she earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Liberal Studies. She later went on to pursue a master鈥檚 in Educational Counseling from the University of La Verne, and earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Cal State Long Beach.Personal InterestsDr. Gamez enjoys spending quality time with her husband and two teenage kids. She enjoys traveling, outdoor walks or runs, and loves plants and flowers.

About Bianca Valle Ward
With a Bachelor of Arts in Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Studies and a Master of Science in Student Development in Higher Education, Bianca brings a student-centered and equity-minded approach to higher education. Her professional experience spans a variety of student services areas, including housing, cultural centers, diversity education, faculty, and program development.
Bianca traveled internationally with Semester at Sea as an Intercultural Competency Coordinator, an experience that helped shape her global DEISA perspective and commitment to inclusive student support. As a first-generation college graduate, Bianca believes in the transformative power of higher education and is passionate about supporting students in achieving personal growth, educational success, and generational advancement.

About Urias Garcia
Urias Garcia is an EOPS/CARE Counselor at 最新糖心Vlog, where he has served students since 2019. Since beginning his counseling career in the California Community College system in 2016, Urias has remained passionate about supporting first generation, low income, and historically underserved students through equitable, student-centered counseling, mentorship, and advocacy.As an EOPS/CARE counselor, Urias supports students in academic planning, transfer preparation, probation intervention, career exploration, and overall student success. In 2023, he was recognized as an Educator of Distinction Award recipient for his dedication to student success, equity-minded leadership, and service to the campus community.Raised in Boyle Heights, Urias is a proud queer Chicano, first generation college graduate, former EOPS student, and member of the 2SLGBTQI+ community. As a nontraditional student who stepped away from college for several years before returning to complete his education, Urias understands firsthand the challenges many students face while balancing school, work, family responsibilities, identity, and self-doubt.Inspired by the support of his own EOPS counselor, Urias found his calling in counseling and mentorship. Today, he strives to create a welcoming, affirming, and inclusive space where students, especially those from historically marginalized communities, feel seen, valued, and supported. He is especially passionate about helping students build confidence, find community, and recognize that they belong in higher education exactly as they are. About Carolyn Lake-Bain
Carolyn Lake-Bain is a bilingual English/Spanish counselor with the EOPS program at 最新糖心Vlog and has worked in higher education for over 16 years. As a former EOPS student, she understands many of the challenges students face while balancing college, work, family responsibilities, and life transitions.
Carolyn began her educational journey at Fullerton College before transferring to the University of California, Riverside, where she earned a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Sociology. She later earned a Master鈥檚 degree in Educational Counseling from Azusa Pacific University. During her college journey, she navigated higher education as a single parent, an experience that strengthened her passion for supporting and encouraging students through their own educational journeys.She believes every student has unique strengths, a meaningful story, and the ability to succeed. Carolyn strives to create a supportive and welcoming environment where students feel heard, empowered, and confident in pursuing their academic, career, and personal goals.Outside of counseling, Carolyn enjoys photography, swimming, kickboxing, spending time with her family, and watching soccer. -

About Luzolo Luzombe
Luzolo Omer Luzombe is an EOPS Adjunct Counselor at Mount San Antonio College. He joined the Mount San Antonio College Counseling Department in February 2016. Luzolo comes from the Los Angeles Community College District where he has been serving EOPS students since 2005 at West Los Angeles College and Los Angeles Trade Tech College. As an EOPS Adjunct Counselor at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, Luzolo has been serving as the EOPS Support Program Counselor, currently renamed Rise Together Program. The Rise Together Program serves EOPS students who are on academic and/or progress probation. In addition, at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, Luzolo worked as a First Year Experience Adjunct Counselor, Co-Coordinator of the Writing Center, and Coordinator of the Reading Center. Furthermore, Luzolo has taught Personal Development/Counseling courses, Basic Skills courses, and Learning Skills courses. He has developed and facilitated student success workshops. Luzolo鈥檚 publications cover the fields of religion, psychology, and education. Luzolo fluently speaks English, French, Kikongo, and Lingala.

Jazmin Hurtado Adjunct Counselor EOPS/CARE
About Luzolo Luzombe
Professional Background
Jazmin Hurtado has 15 years of experience working in higher education. In 2018 she joined Mt. SAC and she worked in General Counseling and the STEM Center for two years, and in May 2020 she became part of the EOPS/CARE team. Jazmin is also a counselor and professor at Santa Ana College and for the past 5 years has worked in General Counseling, the First-Year Experience ULink program, and in their Middle College High School Dual Enrollment program. Before becoming a counselor, Jazmin worked as student program specialist and math tutor at Santa Ana College.
Educational Background
Growing up Jazmin continuously moved between the US and Mexico, which disrupted her K-12 education and eventually led her to drop out of high school and join the workforce at the age of 16. Like many EOPS/CARE students, Jazmin began her higher education journey at a community college. She was a 27 year-old non-traditional, first-generation, Latina, adult-reentry STEM major student. Needless to say, starting and getting through college was challenging, but with hard work and the support of mentors, counselors, and student support programs Jazmin was able to reach her goal. Before she knew she wanted to become a college counselor, Jazmin wanted to pursue a career in medicine. During that time Jazmin was completing her associate鈥檚 and bachelor鈥檚 degree, She worked at Santa Ana College as a math tutor and in various student support programs such as the Transfer Center, Service Learning and the Office of Student Life. After completing her bachelor鈥檚 degree in Biological Sciences at UC Irvine, Jazmin realized she wanted to work in a community college setting and she decided to become a counselor. Jazmin's master鈥檚 degree is in multicultural counseling from San Diego State University and in the near future, she wants to continue her educational journey by pursuing a doctorate degree.
My Personal Background
Jazmin Hurtado was born in Santa Ana, California and life circumstances led her to grow up back and forth between the US and Mexico, so she proudly identifies as a binational Mexican-American. Jazmin's parents immigrated from Michoac谩n, Mexico, to California where her father was a farmworker and picked oranges in Corona, California. Both of her parents only completed elementary school in Mexico, but Jazmin's mother proudly completed her GED in her later years in the US. Jazmin highly values her binational upbringing that has allowed her to experience firsthand her cultural roots and the ability of being fluent in English and Spanish.
Jazmin enjoys traveling, and some of the places she has visited are Hawaii, New York, Oaxaca, Puerto Rico, Italy, Spain, France, and Japan. Jazmin has two rescue dogs named Lexie and Kokis, and on her time off, she enjoys cooking, going for walks at the beach, or taking leisurely nature hikes.

Selene Roman is an Adjunct EOPS/CARE Counselor at 最新糖心Vlog. Since joining the Mt. SAC community in 2018, she has supported students through a holistic and student-centered counseling approach grounded in empathy, advocacy, and authentic connection. Since 2015, Selene has worked with diverse student populations including first-generation students, student-parents, foster youth, DREAM students, re-entry students, and students navigating academic transitions. She is passionate about helping students feel seen, supported, and confident in their ability to succeed.As a first-generation, low-income college graduate, raised by immigrant parents in the heart of Los Angeles, Selene understands many of the barriers students face while pursuing higher education. She attended California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where the support of her EOP counselor inspired her to complete college and pursue a career in counseling. Her lived experiences continue to shape her commitment to equity, belonging, and student success. She believes every student deserves encouragement, guidance, and someone who reminds them they are capable of achieving their goals. -
Alyssa Garcia Adjunct Counselor EOPS/CARE
About Alyssa Garcia
Alyssa Martinez is a newer EOPS/CARE adjunct counselor at Mount San Antonio College. She has been counseling as an adjunct counselor since 2019 at Rio Hondo College and Long Beach City college as well as working as a retention specialist at Coastline Community College. She began her counseling career after being a clerk in the general counseling department at Rio Hondo College and found a passion in helping students.
Alyssa is a first-generation college student; after high school she was going to UCSB but lost her admission and began her journey at Rio Hondo College. She then turned her educational life around and was able to transfer to UC Berkeley. After taking a four-year break in education, she decided to work full time and pursue her master鈥檚 degree in Educational Counseling at the University of La Verne. Alyssa can relate to the process of all community college students; from being on probation to the transfer process, to even being the student who struggles with motivation, balance and time management.
鈥淚 just get it and get you. I understand that community college can be very challenging. I am extremely aware of your process and always see you as not only a student but a person with multiple roles 鈥 and I strive to find you a balanced educational plan. I can understand that you may not have support and motivation from your friends and family, but I am here to uplift you during the challenging times in your academics.鈥
Alyssa currently lives in Pico Rivera and would like to continue her education still. She is just deciding what that looks like. She spends her free time working on fitness, to be mentally and physically strong.

About Charlie Nguyen
Charlie Nguyen is an EOPS/CARE Adjunct Counselor at Mount San Antonio College. He joined Mount San Antonio College in Summer 2023. Prior to working at Mt. SAC, Charlie served as an Academic Advisor at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) since 2016. Over the course of his time working in higher education, he finds passion in engaging with students holistically to foster their personal, academic, and professional development. Charlie is committed to student success and equity, helping students cultivate positive college experiences, and empowering them to overcome obstacles they may encounter along the way.
As a proud first-generation son, raised in a low-income household by immigrant, refugee parents, Charlie understands the unique challenges EOPS students face. He embarked on his college journey as an EOPS student at Irvine Valley College and was fortunate enough to have had a transformative experience with help from his EOPS counselors. After, he transferred to CSULB where he obtained a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Psychology and a master鈥檚 degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Development in Higher Education. The impactful interactions he had with his caring EOPS counselors and their guidance in helping him navigate the college system are what inspired him to pursue a profession as a counselor. As a former EOPS student, he is enthusiastic about working with the Mt. SAC EOPS/CARE team and is eager to support underrepresented students as they strive towards their goals.
In Charlie鈥檚 free time, he enjoys engaging in several different activities. Some of his hobbies include traveling, playing basketball, attending art shows, and cycling.

About Angela Crisantos
Personal Background
Angela Crisantos was born and raised in Anaheim, California a block away from Downtown Disney. She grew up hearing the Disney fireworks every night. Angela's parents immigrated from Michoacan, Mexico to California over 35 years ago and they did not attend college. Angela is first generation and fortunate to be bilingual and fluent in both Spanish and English.
Angela enjoys traveling and loves to have a vacation fund. She have gone to New York, Cancun, Los Cabos, Mexico and she hopes to go to Europe in the future. Angela has a twin sister and a golden retriever that just turned 1 year named Nala. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, exercising, going to the beach, and also baking with her sister and best friend.
Educational Background
Angela began her community college journey not knowing that she had outstanding grades to begin her education at a four year institution. She recalls a high school counselor only mentioning community college to her, and she did not know what she wanted to major in. Until, a close relative was very ill in the hospital where Angela began to show an interest in Nursing. When she took her first Nursing class, Angela knew Science was not her strength and she decided to try a Psychology class since she had already taken AP Psychology in high school. Angela found a greater interest in this major but she did not want to transfer because she knew Science was required. Thus, she went to another community college and majored in Human Services. The instructors in this major were motivational and they inspired Angela to continue her education. Then, Angela transferred to California State University of Fullerton where she began as a peer mentor to help other students and she discovered her passion working with students. This further led Angela to pursue her Master鈥檚 in Educational Counseling and graduated in 2019 at the University of La Verne.
Professional Background
Angela began her experience working with students at Fullerton College as an intern where she supported High school students with transitioning to college and helping them apply to EOPS. This turned into Angela's first employment at the community college where she has worked for over 6 years. She also has experience working with Transfer students, Dual Enrollment, and CalWORKs students. Angela began in 2019 as a counseling assistant in the CalWORKs program at Santa Ana College and then became a counselor. She has served as a CalWORKs counselor for over 1 year and is glad to join the EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs department where she can continue supporting students in their academic journey.

About Sandy Than
Sandy Than is an EOPS and CARE Counselor at Mt San Antonio College, bringing expertise in student support and academic guidance.
Sandy's background reflects a strong focus on student success initiatives, demonstrated through her roles at Long Beach City College. During her time there, she served as a Counseling Professor, providing orientation for college success, career exploration, and college study techniques. Sandy also contributed to completions and re-engagement efforts as a Counselor and Success Coach, supporting student retention and academic progress.
Prior to Mt San Antonio College, Sandy served as a Dual Enrollment Counselor at Los Angeles Harbor College. Building on experience in higher education, she also worked at Golden West College as a Transcript Evaluator, EOP and S Coach, and Financial Aid Coach, demonstrating applied knowledge of student support services.
Sandy's educational background includes a Doctor of Education from California Baptist University, a Master of Science from National University, a Bachelor of Science from California State University, Fullerton, and an Associate of Science from Golden West College. -

About Kendra Ubierna
Kendra Ubierna is a Counselor with EOPS. She is truly excited to connect with students and contribute to the warm and unique campus culture at Mt. SAC. As a former transfer student, Kendra has a deep appreciation for the community college experience, and she looks forward to working alongside students to support them on their educational journey.Kendra would describe herself as a mix of both an extrovert and an introvert. Her extroverted side enjoys hanging out with friends, attending food festivals, traveling around Mexico, and joining running clubs. On the other hand, Kendra's introverted side loves practicing yoga, binge-watching shows with snacks, and tending to her plants as a way to recharge.

About Sandra Aquino
Sandra Aquino is excited to join the team as the Student Services Program Specialist II for EOPS/CARE. As a first-generation college student from an immigrant family, higher education once felt out of reach for her, which is why she is so passionate about supporting and empowering community college students on their own educational journeys.Sandra earned her bachelor鈥檚 degrees in Sociology and Child and Adolescent Development, as well as her Master鈥檚 degree in Counseling with an emphasis in College Counseling and Student Services, from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Sandra truly enjoys guiding students, giving back to the community, and helping students reach their goals.Outside of work, Sandra loves hiking, horseback riding, and trying new foods鈥攕o she's always open to recommendations! Evie Loadjaja Program Account Specialist EOPS/CARE
About Evie Loadjaja
Evie Loadjaja is the Program Account Specialist in the EOPS/CARE & CalWORKs departments for 13 years.
Evie鈥檚 educational and career journey began at Citrus Community College. Evie鈥檚 main challenges as a first-generation international college student from Indonesia were a lack of educational guidance and overcoming cultural and language barriers. Her struggles during her first 2 years at college were compounded when many Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, experienced civil unrest that lead to severe economic hardship. The troubles at home lead Evie to seek asylum in the USA.
Evie was able to focus on her education and study diligently thanks to her refugee status and later earned her citizenship while transferring and completing her education at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) where she earned a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Accounting.
In overcoming her challenges, Evie experienced firsthand how one can achieve their American Dream through education and today she preaches the value of education and how it transforms and improves lives.
Evie's word of advice for everyone is "work diligently and hard in silence and let your success make the noise as God ensures our success in accordance with His plan, not ours."

About Uriel Cardenas
Uriel Cardenas is a first-generation college student who never thought he would continue with higher education. He loves living life and spending time with people he loves, like his friends and family. He enjoys going out to new places, eating, and sleeping in. Sports are also a big part of Uriel鈥檚 life because they keep him active and healthy. He especially enjoys playing basketball, soccer, baseball, and working out. Uriel is proud to say that he鈥檚 an immigrant who was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

About Heather Meltesen
Heather Metlesen is a Mount San Antonio Alumnus who is a first generation college graduate. She has earned an A.S. in Graphic Design, and an A.S. in Animation, and an AA in Fine Arts/Illustration. She has been working with the EOPS/CARE, NextUp/REACH, and CalWORKs teams for four years, and she loves using her artistic talents in graphic design to bring information to students to help ensure their success by connecting them with important resources.
When Heather is not working she is still involved in the arts through her drawing, crafting, and painting minis to prepare for her next Dungeons and Dragons game. She also enjoys spending time with her friends.

About Jeze Lopez
Jeze Lopez serves as the NextUp/REACH Assistant Director, a program that seeks to provide wraparound services for current and former Foster youth in their transition into college, their experience at Mt. SAC and their graduation or transfer to a University. Jeze has a personal philosophy that if we have the opportunity to help others, then we have the responsibility to do so. Jeze is a first generation college graduate and a proud child of immigrants as both of his parent emigrated from Mexico over 40 years ago. Jeze holds a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Psychology from Cal Poly Pomona, and a Master鈥檚 Degree in Public Administration from the University of La Verne. He has over 15 years of experience working with Foster Youth and Homeless Youth, and plans to continue his passion in working with disadvantaged populations and provide opportunities for them in the same manner that he received himself.

About Laura Anaya
Laura Anaya began her educational journey at Rio Hondo College, where she earned Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) in Sociology and Social Work. She went on to complete her Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Social Work at California State University, Los Angeles, and her Master鈥檚 degree in Social Work at California State University, Long Beach. As a proud alumna of EOPS, a member of the DACAmented community, and a non-traditional student, Laura understands the challenges of navigating higher education. She personally experienced the uncertainty of struggling to find a career path that aligned with her strengths, and now uses that journey to empower students in finding their own direction.Her counseling philosophy is rooted in equity, empowerment, and belonging. About Carla Tablas
Carla Tablas has provided continuous support to our students in the EOPS/CARE program. Her 18 years of experience as an Administrative Specialist has helped a diverse range of students by providing helpful resources, but most importantly welcoming them into the college experience. Her dedication to our students is a constant reminder of who she was when she first walked into Mt. San Antonio Community College.
Carla was raised in a small community in the city of La Puente. Growing up, her parents would continuously encourage her to go to college and supported her career goal as a Radiologic Technologist. To her surprise, college was not what she expected. Like any college freshman, Carla felt lost, overwhelmed, and began to doubt her career goal. She began to face unexpected challenges and made the decision to take a long break from school. With the help and guidance of many EOPS/CARE counselors and her father, she faced her challenges and went back to school.
With hard work, focus, and dedication, Carla graduated and earned two Associate鈥檚 degrees at Rio Hondo Community College. She transferred to California State University of Los Angeles, where she earned her B.A. in Sociology. Her new career goal is to become a counselor where she is able to assist both high school and college students achieve their academic goals; facing and overcoming their personal challenges. Her advice to others is, 鈥渋t is never too late鈥 and 鈥渇ocus on you!鈥

Michael Papias Project Expert II NextUp/REACH
About Michael Papias
Michael is a first-generation former foster youth college student who鈥檚 higher education journey began at his local community college in Lancaster, CA. Michael transferred to the University of California, Berkeley where he completed his Bachelor's Degree with Honors in Ethnic Studies, Film and Media Studies, and received a Minor in Education.
After finding his community of foster youth on his university campus, Michael became an advocate for foster youth through community organizing and building a senior honors thesis research project focusing on the experiences of Latina/x/o foster youth. His research led to the creation of a community art intervention project that focused on addressing the cultural gaps experienced by Latina/x/o foster youth in California鈥檚 foster care system. After many years of working in the foster youth non-profit space, Michael has returned to school to pursue his interest in creative teaching.
Michael is currently working towards earning an Associates of Science in Photography at Mt SAC. His ultimate academic goal is to receive a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA) in order to teach at the college and university level, where he wants to blend his interests in Ethnic Studies, Foster Youth experiences, and the creative arts.
Outside of his time at Mt. SAC, Michael volunteers with foster youth non-profits across California as a photography instructor. His excitement to share his photography knowledge with other foster youth comes from his first time picking up a camera while in foster care, the first time he felt in control of his life---Michael鈥檚 work on and off campus is focused on helping his community members reach self-determination.
